After the executions, a German journalist recalled that the leaflets were still being circulated by followers in Hamburg, Germany. These leaflets eventually spread into the concentration camps and other countries. By the end of 1943, British war planes were dropping leaflets by tens of hundred million leaflets over German cities and towns. In June of 1943, a German novelist Thomas Mann dedicated his regular BBC broadcast to the White Rose. He quoted Hans' harsh words to the judge, "Soon you will be standing where I am standing now" and he finished with a statement he used as a slogan for the broadcast, "A new belief in freedom and honor is dawning." Sophie Scholl showed the world what women were capable of, and who the true threat was in Germany. Her impact is visible in the numerous schools and public venues named after the family, along with several memorials, including her resting place and a memorial of the original leaflets in their original location. Several movies, including The Final Days (2005) were made to honor the courageous efforts of Sophie Scholl and the White Rose. |
